Hi Guys,
I bought the above car from craigslist today. Since the seller was driving 140 miles to meet me I really couldn't stand him up on a deal.
I didn't know there was a problem with the harmonic balancer pulley until he mentioned to me the noise coming from the engine compartment. I definitely wouldn't have purchased it if I didn't think the problem is minor.
I looked at the front of the engine carefully and found the two belt pulley on the HB appears to have shifted toward the engine block and the alternator belt is cutting into the timing belt cover. Is/was this common? What could this possibly be/how? Do I just purchase a new HB/Pulley and replace the defective part?
Thanks in advance,
1991 740 2.3 harmonic balancer pulley problem
As I recall the Harmonic balancer is two parts put together with rubber between to dampen vibration. We used to see them like yours from time to time seperated, (broken). Replace it with a good used one or buy new. But do it right away, cause pretty soon you won't be turning any v-belts!

+1.
It is a common fault, easily rectified but I would use a new one as it is difficult to determine how good a used one is.
