850 Dash Lights Out

Post by prienzo »

My dash lights are out. I can't see how fast I am going, the oil leve, etc. The green indicator lights works, as does the temperature and time. The fuse is fine. I checked the manual and it didn't describe how to change the bulbs. It only said to bring it to Volvo. Since I don't want Volvo to charge me 800 dollars to replace a bulb, I would like to know how to do it myself. I noticed two screws above the dash but by glancing at them, they don't seem to solve my problem. Does anyone know what to do? Thanks.

It would be unusual if all the bulbs burnt out at once. There are six of them.

I replaced mine when I replaced my odometer gear since jostling around old bulbs can cause them to fail. It requires removing the instrument cluster. Volvospeed.com has a how-to with pictures on removing the cluster. If you do it, use their method, because the Chilton manual will run you into a dead end. By the way, if it is a turbo, disconnect the vac line down below so as not to break off the plastic fitting on the back of the cluster.

You are correct that if you do it yourself you will save big $$$. Just make sure that the bulbs are the problem and not something else. Good luck.

Thanks for the help. They didn't all go at once. The lights on the oil temperature and gas were out when I bought the car. The others just went out. Thanks for all the help.
