side view mirror on a 240

Ive ripped off my side view mirror (manual) in a freak gardening accident and in trying to remove the old to replace with the new, I cant seem to get the triangular interior plastic trim off. Do i have to remove the door panel or should I simply use more force?

Volvo has been using so many different types of mirrors, but when reading Haynes I get the impression that you should use more force.
