02 S60 Vibration under load

Post by wireit1 »

Hello
Am enjoying the forum what wealth of info! Great sight Mattew
I picked up a very clean 02 S60 with 40k miles on it. Unfortunately on the way home (2000 miles) I hit a VERY large chuck hole at speed. The suspension bottomed out it there was a jarring hard noise. I expected I broke something or at least ruined a tire but after inspecting it everything looked ok. BUT after hitting the road again not at first but after 3 to 500 miles i started to notice a slight vibration in the gas pedal. Then it got progressively worse and after arriving home with the hope that the wheel was bent or thru the weight off had the wheel balanced (really didnt notice the problem with the spare on going into the shop n back) but after replacing the wheel found that the problem was still there and worse than ever.
Symptoms are allmost all ways under acceleration from aprox 45 to 65 or so and are hardly noticable at 75 to 80 or when decelerating? basically it feels like an unbalanced tire on the front end accept that it only happens while accerating and seems to be worse going uphill...any ideas what to check first if the wheel is truly balanced? Any ideas would be a godsend! the car was smooth as silk till this happened.
Thanks for your ideas
Have a great day

Hello, Check the lower control arm and tie rod ends. While you're at it swap the wheels front to back. Kira

Agreed - check the suspension and swap the possible bad tire to the back.
Chuck hole damage usually results in a bent wheel. This is most likely the culprit . many tire shops feel that if a tire can go on and it holds air then its fine. Please do a visual check of the inside and outside of the rim for any signs of bend or damage.
A wheel ,tire and accurate balance is all that is needed for 90% of these repairs. The other 10% I will explain below .

Some wheels are very strong and transfer the engery to damge the hub bearing, strut or rubber suspension components.
If the tire hit in a deep chuck hole then the suspension may be forced backwards. Take a look and see how many fingers you can put between the wheel and the fender on both the damaged and undamaged side.

For driving diagnosis
45 to 65 wobble generally indicates a tire imbalance or out of round (radial or lateral runout) condtion that does appear less after 75mph.

If it does truly go away except when accelerating you need to look a the the suspension being able to move significantly or look at the CV joints especially the inner. The inner CV when worn does show a shake under acceleration only. But this condition is usually wear induced and appears in cars occasionally with over 70K miles. Very often in cars with 150K -200K miles.

In the rarest of cases I have seen a transmission output bearing be broken. Has happened twice in the past 27 years. This requires the removal and repair of the trans and gives off a notable low toned whirring noise at all speeds.

If you like any good suspension alignment shop should be able to help. Have them put it up on the rack and check everything.

Can you upload some pics of the front and abck of the effected rim. This will help

Hi folks,
I changed the control arm bushes as a result of an MOT failure. Not the easiest job in the world. However I now have an issue with vibration from the Nearside Wheel under acceleration and breaking. Normal driving is no issue. Is it possible that the drive shaft is not seated properly? Could it be something else?

Many Thanks
