Hello my first forum post so let me say that any assistance is appreciated. I recently purchased the above vehicle with a 2.0 T motor, it has covered 189,000 miles and has a hit and miss service history although from 2005 the vehicle has records showing regular oil changes. So here are the symptoms...from the exhaust a blue smoke can be seen both at idle with larger amounts on acceleration and gear changes, plumes would best describe it. From a standing start there is a noticeable lack of power for about 3 to 5 seconds after which the car accelerates as we expect volvos to, the vehicle can accelerate upto the legal limit and beyond without unusual noises just copious amounts of smoke although this can not be seen at higher speeds i assume it is the air flow just distributing it faster. The car is using approximately 4 litres of oil per 700 miles. At the service station I lifted the bonnet to check the oil, again, and noticed some smoke rising from the rear of the engine ie near the bulkhead. I convinced myself it was coming from the area where the turbo is located but it could be oil just falling onto a hot surface. No oil dripping on floor and the only visible external oil is under the plastic cover at the top of the engine where you access the spark plug leads/covers. Your contribution here will allow me to decide whether to break the car or sell it with the problem disclosed. Thank you again in anticipation of your responses...

Sounds like your PCV system is really plugged up!
Search around the site here for posts on that & a cleaning tutorial is here:

It's for an older model 5-cylinder, but yours should be more or less the same.

jaBlacburn thanks for that...I had thought it may be badly worn rings or a blown turbo. What is the evidence against either of those being the causitive problem...
