240 airbag saftey

We are looking at buyint our 16 year old a 240 sedan. I have heard that the airbags in those cars are not safe (especially for a thin kid) and that we are better off saftey wise with a pre-airbag model. I can't find any research on this. Do you have any thoughts or information?

Normally the '89(16 years old) does not have an airbag. It was first used in the '90 as an option. So if its really 16 years old it doesn't have an airbag. If it is a newer and you want to take it out i advise you have it done by a professional because airbags are realy dangerous to play around with. If you're not sitting upright in the seat and it would exlode it can break you're neck etc.
