The AW40 transmission can be checked for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) using the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) unit. On cars from the 1996 model year a scanner is needed to access the codes via the data link connector which is on the right side of the centre console. However, on cars up to and including the 1995 model year this can be done using the OBD unit in the engine compartment. Instructions for diagnosing pre-1996 cars are in this attachment:

Hi Bill
I have a 1997 940 classic LPT and I have just found that the OBD plug is located inside and at the base of the centre armrest locker (instead of on the side of the centre console). My question is whether this OBD plug/socket is the OBD11 or not and whether a hand held scanner from e.bay would work on this vehicle. I have had a local garage plug both (one british and one chinese) of their OBD11 scanners into this socket without getting suitable readings. Is this socket OBD11 compliant or is it still of the old OBD1 type? The vehicle was manufactured in 1996 and first registered in 1997, this was at the end of the 940 factory run and may have incorporated parts of the V70.
My original problem was the Lambda sond light came on and the engine stalled and temporarily refused to start. I fixed the exhaust manifold problem but the lambda sond light remained lit presumably with the fault codes saved. I reset it by removing the battery leads, shorting out the positive and negative car leads (to short out any capacitance in the system) and then reconnected the battery. The lambda sond light then extinguished automatically after start up. Without a suitable diagnostic scanner or unit, is there any other way of checking the fault codes and resetting these codes?

Diagnostic connector. I have a 1997 970 with the same location of the diagnostic plug. Mine is a OBD II, as I believe all cars of this vintage is. The protocal is mandated by some agency of the government, and all cars sold in the US have to meet these requirements.
As for the garages not being able to communicate with your car's onboard computer, that's strange. I was getting occasional transmission errors driving down the road, and stopping at the local parts store to clear the codes was less than convenient. I ordered a hand held reader (an Autel model) through amazon and it works perfectly. Finaly found (with help from this forum) that the problem solution was to disconnect the connector from the transmission to engine compartmen, clean all the terminals, coat with liberal amounts of electrical dialectric grease, and re-connect. Solved that problem. Now trying to find the connection that controls the back up lights. Have the same problem with those: Intermitant "on" - usually after driving a distance. Am afraid the problem may be related to the PNP switch which is really not handy to access.
Hope this helps.

Bill, I'm sorry it's over 10 years but I know Volvo people that get bit by the bug usually keep on the Volvo radar for ever.. so my question is , Should my 98' S90 have a check engine light if there is a code with the transmission? I assume yes, but it's Volvo.. I'm getting a whining and a strange shift
