Tuning wastegate for more boost
Tuning wastegate for more boost
How do I adjust the factory wastegate in my 94 850 to gain more boost???
I love my car, my girlfriend, and my camera.

Because I can't remember where the wastegate is well enough to put it into words without looking at my 850 first, I just did a Google search and came up emptyhanded. It's dark outside so I'm not going to be able to see much on my 850 right now.
It's a long threaded screw that turns and moves an arm farther/less far down on a spring.
I did a very conservative turn or two about 3 or 4 years ago. Seemed too good to be true -- more power, no cost. Did it work? I think, but without instrumentation, it's like adding a K&N air filter: you can't be sure it's there without knowing it's there. It's more of a psychological boost
.
Having said all that, one thing to make clear is that tamping down on the wastegate does not give you more boost. It just keeps the turbo spinning faster, or keeps it spinning when it wouldn't be spinning. Therefore, it may increase your boost response time.
And then there is (was when this 'mod' came out years ago) lots of talk that the ECU sees the situation and simply backs down on the engines' parameters to leave you back where you started.

1. With the heat shield off...
2. Look down at the turbo, there will be a pivoting piece of metal with a rod. It will start about mid turbo and go all the way over to the right.
I mean when you hear wastegate actuator rod, it really is a rod on the top of the turbo.
to "tune" it as you say you would turn this rod (I'm not 100% sure which way) and that would allow the wastegate to stay closed a bit longer, boost a bit quicker as well. But I advise that this may not be such a great idea. Many peopel I know have done this with adverse affects. One buddy of mine couldn't get it back to stock when he bought his chip, so he had to have the dealer do it (that was money!). So I would say do a chip before the wastegate, heck even a MBC would go before the wastegate adjustment.

to increase boost you would want to make the arm shorter and if you give it about 2-3 turns it should make a noticible increase of adding a couple extra pounds of boost, however if you make it too short, you run into the risk of not having the correct fuel mixture and the car can misfire

personaly i wouldnt bother playing with turning up any actuator or doing anything to your standard gate settings (yourself) if you want more boost ie in the seat g/force you wont achieve it that way/i have been tuning and fitting turbos all shapes and sizes for 19 years and the advice i will give you is ....read what some of these guys on here have done to theirs ,its good and they pretty much know their stuff..if you want more boost change tparts for upgrades that are designed for the job/// have a scroll through these forums there is some real nice machines here
(its only useful advice if you take it) tread carefuly my friend

yo pal.listen to turbomasterfitter he had 2 days on my car and b...dy hell now it is one of the quickest machines for miles 0~60 5.2 /96~11.2 and a T.E of 162 (unofficial of corse) just for you boys in bloooooo ..i always do 70

You can adjust your turbos actuator but you aren't really doing anything because the engines boost is controlled by the computer. Changing the actuator's setting may help spike the boost with a high level then the computer will be nice enough to back it down instantly.
Buy a manual boost controller and set your own boost level. A manual boost controller will only work on cars older than 1999, and the max boost you can run is 15lbs, unless you get it chipped with higher boost levels than stock.
