Breaks catch on rotor maybe please help

Post by Shaff1111 »

Hi i have a 98 s70 (the non-turbo) This just started happening after the winter. When i back up or even when im driving down the road. It feels like the back left tire is catching on something and the car shakes. Also when backing up it catches and with out gas the car does not move at all. I took it to get a free break inspection and he told me it was possible the emergency break catching on the rusted rotor. The rotor is rusted pretty bad and when i jack the car up the tire does not spin very well. Could the rotor be rusted so bad its causing this or is it something else? Any input would be great.

The shoes rust, fall away from the backing, and get stuck to the rotor. I had one stick after some rain, dragging my rear wheel across the ground, and my parking-brake cable self-destructed within about 50 feet with a loud bang. Not a fun repair.

Someone around here's got pictures of replacing the parking brake shoes, I'll try to find them for you.

I see what your saying but do i need a new shoe or did it just fall away and need to be put back in place? I would hate to rip it apart and find out i need a new shoe or pad.

Either way, you're going to have to take it apart to inspect the brake shoes/pads and repair /replace any damaged parts.

If you're going through the work of taking it apart anyway, you may as well put new shoes in it. Once you do one side, the other goes about 2-3x as fast.

Most of them fall apart with age and can't be put back.
