95 850T - Dash Lights out on

Post by marinwood »

Just pulled out of underground parking and when I turned the front lights on it failed to get the dash lights on.
Strange. I turned engine off. Reset battery; checked some fuses under the hood referring to instrument light; I think #35 fuse.
Rheostat seems intact. What else can I check . I heard there is a fascia fuse panel on the 96`s. Does that exist on the 95`s, if so where? I think it could have something to do with my sensors that sense whether it is day or night and it may got confused.
Sometimes in daylight the instrument lights come on briefly when I startup the engine (lights turned off) then go out in 10secs.
I don`t have the Daytime running lights on anyway. But I thought resetting the batter would solve it but apparently it didnt.
Stubborn volvo i got :) Any pointers would help.thanks

Thanks folks. It was the dimmer switch. Got a used one for $40. works ever since.

Usually this is caused by a failed dimmer switch. They'll either develop a bad spot on the switch, or just die altogether. Having the dash lights come on for a brief second usually means this is a cause.

Send RobTheModd here a PM, I know he's got several 850 dimmer switches one of which I'm sure he'd be glad to send your way.

hey guys....

just fixed this issue in my t5r....

found this solution online

"Check fuse #35 - 10 amp. If that is good, chances are it's either the dimmer switch/rheostat (probable) or a wiring problem (less likely).

Pry the fog switch & dimmer switch out with a small screw driver - they pop right out.

Unplug the dimmer connector. There are five wires at the following pin locations:
1. BRN/ORG: Supply voltage with ignition at ACC or RUN.
2. BLK: Ground. (for dimmer - lights are grounded separately)
3. WHT: Supply voltage with headlight switch OFF.
4. PNK: Output voltage to lights.
5. WHT/BLK: Ground with headlight switch OFF.

Using your multimeter, check for correct electrical functions at the connector pins.

Jumper pins 1-4 (BWN/ORG to PNK). If the dash lights are now on with the ignition to ACC or RUN, it's definitely the dimmer. It can be left this way until you get a replacement dimmer."
