Rear caliper removal...urgent

Post by AlanS »

I have the car on blocks...2001 S40. The caliper will not come off. Obviously the emergency brake cable is a tad too tight, even at 'release'. I cannot get to the handle (where, on most cars) to back off of the cable. I am assuming there are nuts on the end of the cable. It must be inside the console, but haven't a clue as to how to get in there. There is a plate on the back of the console, but when you take out the ashtray (rear), there are two things that I have never witnessed that seem to hold it in.
Anyways...how do I get some slack on the cable???

Thanks, but that does not have how to remove the console where the brake is. It assumes that you have already gotten to that point and addresses the section where the shifter is. I need the REAR of the REAR console.

Ok
But the fact that Volvo labeled their repair procedures incorrectly is 100% your fault.

Good Luck

I can now garuntee you that the PDF is wrong. Firstly, there is an access panel on the back (by the ashtray). This I was able to get off, finally. It will allow me to fool with the cable. BUT...the console is now 1/2 off, there are none of the items mentioned on the diagram. No #3 or #4. The darn thing is stuck and I can't figure out how to unhitch it. Flashlight, mirror, small screwdriver to pry...nothing...

Sometimes they use 3M stick tape to stop them from rattling. Keep looking or stop . If you can adjust the cable then put it back together when you are done.

Here is the parts picture of what you are dealing with.

Got it, thank you!!!! There is a small rectangular access panel at the bottom of the bucket...so hidden / so camouflaged, that I missed it. The fuzzy grey interior had it blend in. Two screws....OUT like butter. Now, the task of cleaning all the crap that my son (24 y.o.) spilled, dropped, etc. in there. I can now loosen the E-brake...but that will be a job for tomorrow...heck, this tired me out!
