To-do lists for your Volvo this Spring?

Post by matthew1 »

Mine: Oh, and antenna replacement. My girlfriend took my 850 through the car wash machine a few weeks ago -- with the radio on -- to surprise me with a clean Volvo. Yea, she surprised me.

Edit: adding the following
  • injector refurbing (removal, soak in Seafoam overnight)
  • replace that one difficult black vacuum tube... goes to the bottom of the turbo

Haha, I'm sorry to hear about your antenna.

Here's my list:

Entire front suspension rebuild
Rear shocks
Oil and ATF replacement
T-stat and coolant flush
Replace interior and dash light bulbs
Upper motor mount
PNP switch
and interior cleaning

Can't wait until it's all over and done with. :-D

Hrm...I guess I'll list these in the order of importance:

-Ignition switch
-Install new front turn signal assy.
-Clean/flush out Intercooler
-Vacuum hoses - I'm slowly losing them one by one, I figure I should just replace them all.
The bad thing is I've just been stealing pieces of hose to fix these from my dad's "parts" BMW, the 35-year old rubber hose is still in far better shape than any of the ones Volvo used.
-New radiator :(
-Lower motor mount
-Door check (again)
-Drivers door lock assembly
-Radio/interior switch/shifter light replacement.
-New shocks all the way around ($$$)
-Alternator & battery (at least before next winter comes around)

Just did within the past 2-3 months:
-ATF flush
-oil change
-New oil cooler & lower trans. cooler lines
-Added new TCV
-Changed dash bulbs
-PCV system
-Rear brakes & rotors
-Seafoam

This is all assuming my car doesn't spring another huge oil leak from who knows where.

I'll try to take pictures and things along the way and add to what other people have already done to make it easier for those of you that have to do these things in the future.

Matt, I did the same thing to my antenna a few years back...I couldn't blame that one on my girlfriend.

I was busy on my car during the early winter so my list is pretty superficial and smaller.
Oil/ filter using synthetic
Strip and paint the roof trim
Prep and paint both bumpers, dyes do not work!!!!
Clean the fabric ceiling

Yeah, my list has been going down rather than up...knock on wood.
  • Front-end alignment
  • Drain/fill transmission.
  • Replace blower (the squeaks are back a couple of weeks after oiling it)
  • Figure out why the trip computer lamps are out after fixing the odometer
  • Pray for "Forte Seal Conditioner" to work
  • Replace RMS when it doesn't

Now, when you say radio bulbs, I think you should take a better look at this situation. I came to the conclusion that it isn't the bulbs in the radio most of the time, but in fact it's the wiring harness. There are multiple wires for illumination. I discovered this when i swapped out my stock deck (mostly cause it had a short in the volume knob, where only the left side played) with a stock deck from a 97 with a CD player too!!! (yay!) and to mu surprise, the same lower right side of my radio face still didn't illuminate. I know that this radio fully illuminated in its past car (cause my friend wrecked his wagon) and i know it is 100% functional. So before you go through the headache of busting open your deck, check the harness cables.

I bought my v70 at the end of March and got started...probably paid to much for the car.

Things I have done:

Timing belt, Tensors, Cam seals
Serpentine Belt
Right Spring Seat
Fixed the 6 CD changer found the lost cable

Things still needed that I know of

All engine mounts.
ATF Flush
Catalytic converter/ o2 sensors
Drivers side spring seat.
Exhaust hanger
Figure out why my sunroof will open but not close properly.
Figure out how to fix passenger side rear door. (stuck lock?)
Replace cigarette lighter
and trip computer option (is this even possible?)
Figure out why my lock switch will lock everything but not unlock anything.
Clean the carpet again!

Assuming I don't sell the car before I deploy (still up in the air)-

Re-paint bumpers and trim
Replace "aftermarket" waterfall grill with original XC eggcrate
Get the headlamp wipers working
Re-dye driver's seat
Replace radio bulbs
Figure out which motor mount is bad
Re-align steering wheel
Replace wastegate lines
Replace turbo drain seal
Replace sunroof seal
Tint the tail lights
Driver's side door check

All little things, but i like to tinker. Should keep me busy for the next 50 days before I take off. If only the wife would leave me alone....
