So i have been having an issue with the drivers power window recently. It started as sometimes when you would attempt to roll it up it wouldnt (it wasnt like it was struggling to roll up, it just didnt budge at all). Now it has been stuck down for several days, and i prefer not to sit on a wet seat so im hoping to fix it before it rains. also, there has never been a problem rolling the window down, only up. at first i thought it might be the motor, but ive had those give out on other cars before and usually they started going thru a chugging motion on roll up this on didnt.
any help greatly appreciated!!
thanks,
Joe

It's usually the contacts in the switch go bad. If you can pry up the panel, you can get to the wires underneath. (I'm not sure what exactly that entails on an 850 as the switches are in the console, but it's very easy on my model). Pull out the ones for the drivers door switch and touch them to the contacts. One polarity will roll the window down; reverse that, and it should roll up.
You can try to clean up the contacts with rubbing alcohol, or you can usually find used switch assemblies on Ebay. It's a very common problem where the controls are installed in the door of S/V70 models.

I had the same problem with my V70.
I ended up ordering a new driver's window and door switch from http://www.switchdoctor.net.
It was only $90, cheapest I could fnd new. It works and looks great.

These are the power and motor pins for the drivers window:
12 + = Blue - Pin A2
GND = Black - Pin B4
Window Motor = Green - Pin A4
Window Motor = Blue/Green - Pin A3
Which way is up? Which way is down?
Dunno...
But just reverse polarity to go the other way.
Then, Post Back!

Common flatware. Being very careful with the trim around the outside edge,
a couple of butter knives releasing the spring clips at the sides will get it.
Pull up on the switches VERY carefully as you release them and out she comes.

I just cleaned mine (99 V70XC) about three weeks ago. Window started working intermetently while at McDonald drive through.
If the switch is same as V70 above, yes, butter knife or any thin sheet metal can be used on both sides of the switch assembly.
I wasn't able to pull the door panel out without braking the clips. They were really hard to pull, so I opted to pull the switch assembly out.
After taking the switch out and removed all the connectors, I opened up the switch assembly completely. With a small flat screw driver, go around the switch assembly along the tabs. Don't pry too hard, it may crack. Just enough to pull out if fine.
I could open the switch without any damages.
Mine had driver's switch contacts fully covered with dirt/oil etc. If you remove the top of the switch (gray plastic), it will make it easier to clean each switch also.
actual switch has a slider inside that pull and push the brass contact strips. The slider must be moved both way to clean the actual contacts area.
Use an old tooth brush, Automotive Electric parts cleaner. Autozone had two electric parts cleaners. One regular and the other quick drying. I used regular one since there was lots of gunk to remove..
If you have an access to air compressor, it will help blow out the dirt a lot easier. If you don't have one, get a can of compressed air from WalMart (about 5 ~ 10 each can) or even better at Costco (about 12 for package of 4 cans). Usually available at any PC, Electronics stores. It also helps on drying up the cleaner if you want it to dry faster.
Does anyone know what kind of paint Volvo used on those gray switches? Mine are really sticky, so I need to find a way to completely cure the paint. all switches were white plastic with gray paint on.

Until you can get the switches fixed remove the door card undo the 10mm bolts pull the motor out raise the window up and refit the motor after removing the power lead then your window will be in the up position and won't be able to drop
