2001 V70. I sure like this car

Post by Toronthab »

Beautiful car. My first Volvo a v70 wagon, 2001, has had some work done on it, and will have the PVC related front and rear seals done on Tuesday as part of the deal I made with Sasha at Great Cars in the Toronto area. THe mechanics I had check it over as part of the deal found the seal problem and told me th FWD tranny as ok, as indeed it seems with 161K.

They did the mounts and suspension too.

But I must say, that I find this to be one hell of a nice car. Very pleasant to be in, period, with the moon roof and visibility; very responsive and quick along with a simply excellent suspension system. I can see why Ford took it for their Taurus. It's an absolute pleasure to drive. As my philosophy professor at U of T used to say, "Good Lord willin' 'n the crik don't rise", it will continue to be the pleasure it is at present. My thanks to all of you who have contributed to my knowledge.

I like this car a ton. (Tonne in Canada)

I was feeling the same way you are right now back 4 years ago when I bought my 2001 V70, but then the maintenance mayhem started and has not ended until now...I wish you all the best with your new ride and hope you have many uninterrupted/maintenance free kilometers...unfortunately this will be my last Volvo...

Hello, FMI (For My Information): What does "...did the mounts and suspension" mean exactly? FYI: Since the main seals are being replaced it would be smart to address the cause. The oil collector box (for lack of the correct name) is known to clog and cause the internal pressure which causes the seals to fail. At 161K and no maintenance records you'd be foolish to ignore this item. Similarly the advice by polskamafia mij to change the transmission fluid and see to it's software upgrades is not to be ignored. Real quickly on transmission fluid: Toyota Type IV=Mobil 3309=Expensive Volvo fluid. Toyota's fluid is the way to go due to availability. Using the wrong fluid will be "One giant leap backward for mankind (you)". A dumb@ss mechanic might even lie to you and use the wrong stuff. I completely understand E170_ Driver's position. I hope to get good value out of my 2002 (w/108K). The stinking, filthy blue oval engineered the bad valve body into an otherwise great transmission left a bad taste in my mouth. I hope that the new owner's will foster the aftermarket repair parts section of the company so we can get parts in the future. Additionally, I don't need a car with a dozen processing systems-which require computer linking-built into it. I'm lucky to have found a specially ordered and well cared for car. I don't like having to hold my breath. Kira

+1 GeorgeandKira. The ATF information couldn't have been made simpler.

Ford Blue oval transmission? What is that supposed to mean?
The car was designed before Ford even bought Volvo and the transmission was designed and made by Aisin Warner a Toyota company.
It's Volvo's own stupidity for not requiring fluid changes at 30K miles as they (Toyota) does ON THEIR OWN CARS WITH SIMILAR TRANSMISSIONS
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

Thanks for the advice. Does it make a difference whether its AWD or front wheel drive? For sure its not shifting into neutral when stopped for it conitnues to push. I'll see what I can find out, and thanks you guys for your concern.
