oil cap pressure leak - 850 se sedan

Post by poroman »

I have a oil leak through the oil filler cap. There is a lot of pressure when i undo the cap. Kind of pressure when u release the radiator cap type of pressure. The ABS light came on when driving then a short time later the oil lamp warning light came on. I put oil in (realized it did not need it) and the abs lamp went off. But in a short space (minutes) the oil was spewing out the oil filler cap on a massive way. When I undid the cap it pressure realesed.

Why, what and where is causing the pressurization of the engine causing the oil to spew out??

Your PCV system is clogged up and needs to be cleaned.

This is the same reason you blew out the cam seal in your other post.

agree on that. While you're at it would be good to order the cap seal chances are yours is hard and crusty from the overspill

Fix the underlying PCV problem before you replace the cap gasket. At least at this point it is acting as a pressure relief and it might save your RMS.

James, you can do a search for fixing the PCV - there's some excellent write-ups here, including photos, and at other Volvo forums. It looks like a lot of fun and hope to do it soon myself!

Haha...make sure to get the kit from either IPD or FCP.

Edit: One of the write ups is on the first page of the 850/s/v70 forum.
