Hello everyone,
I have a 2005 S40 2.4i with 57000km's, I use 5w30 or 10w30 synthetic, and 93 octane fuel. I have a problem with engine rattle (lifter?) on startup. This only occurs after the engine has been brought to normal operating temperature, then allowed to sit for a certain time, then restarted. It won't make the noise if the engine is cold, and it wont make the noise if the engine is hot. I've read about hydraulic lifter issues, or oil pressure and pick up issues, or is this just normal for the engine. Any help would be appreciated.

Not normal but does occur for some.
Over time deposits can clog the passages to the lifters or the lifters themselves. Consider an engine flush with a quality engine oil flush. then change the oil and filter. Using a high quality synthetic in a clean engine keeps depoits well controled.
Also - some aftermarket oil filters have had issues. Try the Volvo (Mann) filter if you don't have it on now.
