Problem with battery

Post by meteg »

about eight months ago I replaced the battery of my '95 850N/A car.the user manual and Vadis stated the correct battery amperage would be 540A 60ah but the shop I bought the battery insisted on selling me a battery with larger capacity. which is 680A 72ah

I was thinking that this battery would cause trouble with the charging system but it worked fine.the car sat in the parking lot for about 2 months.today when I went to the car the car wouldnt start and I checked the voltage with a multimeter it read 11.20 volts
seemed pretty low to me so I removed the battery from the car and took it home and connected it to the charger. after 5 hrs now the battery reads 11.85 volts.. I know that it should be around 12.70 volts.. so either this battery is faulty or because of using this battery the charging system couldnt charge it properly to lack of capacity...

I must also add that my car has an amplifier 4x100w oem(HA-7400) taken form a c70.. I forgot to disconnect the amplifier fuse which I connected to the positive terminal of battery.maybe this killed the battery I dont know..

should I buy a new battey with the factory specs?

any comments?

I think the battery is bad. The voltage may have dropped to low to hold a charge. The only reason I think this is because it should have changed when it was on the charger. Either way, the battery should also still be under warranty. I would just get another one and go from there.

What are the chargers specs?

With a trickle charger it could take days.

A larger capacity battery has more reserve and puts no extra load on the alternator.

Let it charge for a day and reinstall. Take a voltage reading while the car is cranking. If its below 9 volts replace the battery.

Shouldn't have to worry about the amp. It has a remote power switch that's enabled by the head unit, so it won't pull any power unless the H.U. is on.

hello again,

thanks everyone for the comments, I believe the battery is faulty because I kept it charged for 8 hrs when being charged the voltage increases but when disconnected it decreases rapidly. the charger is able to charge slow and fast.. when slow it charges 2a when fast it charges 12a an hour.another thing I noticed is after the battery is connected to the charger the charger turns off after 10 mins. maybe the battery is not holding the charge.. I will take battery and go to the car an hour later and test the voltage when starting the car. if it fails again I will replace it.

If you let the car sitting for 2 months, that's what you could expect.

European batteries don't have the quality like u.s batteries. With european batteries in these cars you would be happy if you could start your car after 2 weeks of sitting(no starting) with a fully charged battery....even if it's Bosch battery.

I heard that U.S batteries are much, much reliable.

Generally speaking...with every battery which isn't installed in the car at the factory, you will not be able to start the car even after 2-3 weeks of sitting(no starting).

But...even with the factory installed battery you still will not be able to start the car after sitting in the parking lot for 2 months.

If you read instruction/service manual for most cars, even Volvo's, you will see that manufacturer say that even with original(factory installed) battery you will not be able to start your car after 15-20days of sitting & not starting it.

The only thing that can help to start your car after a month or two of sitting,is to install another battery in the trunk with same capacity like the one under the hood & to connect it paralelly(+ on + & - on -).

Good luck!
