Replaced radio in 2001 S80 T6

I purchased a 2001 S80 T6 with a broken cd player (HU-611). I bought a used radio (same model) and replaced it. It did not ask for a code and everything works except I can no longer control it from the steering wheel. Does anyone know if I need to take it to Volvo to get it programmed or is there something I can do myself. Thanks.

I've heard you always need to have it programmed. Also heard that you need to place a radio that was made more or less in the same period (year....plus or minus a couple of months) as the car.
