Where do I start?

Post by jgray850turbo »

Hi all,

First, I want to thank you for so many of you taking your time to help with these issues. I'm a new poster and new Volvo owner. I've read many of the posts pertaining my model and know that they'll prove useful, I'm just trying to know what I should start with that may be affecting other systems. I'll give a brief decription of the problems I'm having, and then follow with more details that may help in this.

1995 850 Turbo: odo broken reads 58,000mi / ECU miles show 94,093 (thanks to this forum)
1. Runs VERY rough or stalls right after Fill Up.
2. Persistant misfire, especially at idle and begining to accelerate.
3. A mild case of oil under plug and wire cover.
4. If activate 'winter' mode on tranny, will not shift out and arrow flashes on dash. (Have learned to not touch! :)
5. Multiple codes: 5-2-2 Ho2, 1-5-4 EGR Excess flow, 1-5-3, misfires, trans range sensor, srs, abs.

Now for the details. A month ago I took a chance on a 95 850 Turbo AT, Cost-1500.00, Body-great shape, leather-not to bad, miles-broken odometer, engine-little miss/no turbo pressure on gauge/no A/C(compressor engaging frequently). Autocheck was clear up to the last entry for the odometer which reads about 58,000. A cali car, moved to vegas, has emmision inspections until 2002 when it shows 46,000 miles...then disapears until march 2010 at a dealer auction in fl. Car shows signs that it may have sat for some time(tires & other rubbers dryrotted, drivers top door panel excessively faded and dry, ect). Now for the issues (I know some of these have been discussed and I will use those posts for repairs and details). 10 minutes after leaving the dealer I stop to fill up, starts hard then stalls, start again...rev to get going...engine bogging, sputtering, end up dying in parking lot, wont start, call dealer-closed. After an hour or so starts but running rough, limp it to Craker Barrel accross street, decide to stay night(1 1/2 hr drive home) try to take back to dealer in morning. Morning-starts 'ok', missing, get to dealer, sorry AS-IS, reads misfires on 4 & 5, replaces plugs, still running rough but make it home. The next day running better, but still missing, check vacuum hoses, find small hose rotted and broken on right front of intake leading an in line valve(part of EVAP purge system?), replace for .86 cents, TURBO guage now shows pressure and seems to work(sweet), still running rough. Take to Indy mech to check A/C and codes(didn't know about onboard ECU then), replace 12.00 O-ring, purge, lube, fill, A/C ICE cold - 93.00(sweet). 13 codes(not sweet). The next day have to make a quick trip to SC(in another car), wife, son, and I get jobs, have to move QUICK, plan to tow Volvo until I can get running better, son has to drive from FL to SC two days later to start work on monday, his mustang breaks down 100 miles from home, no choice but to take Volvo. On a sunday morning I change plugs, cap & rotor (wires 'looked' good, still missing), get 4 new tires put on, and give him a can of Seafoam to put in when he fills up(I was instructed by mechanic to run gas very low, put a couple gallons in and run very low, then fill up to try to rid system of old or bad gas). He drives an hour or so, fills up, (you guessed it, running crappy), waits a bit, gets it on road and makes it to Macon, GA. This issue has happened all 5 times we've filled up, although it seemed to be not as bad when the car was really warm(in Macon). Also, it will only accept about 14 gallons even when very empty. I get to SC a week later, find one new plug (Autolite Platinum) fouled bad in CYL 3, test show defective plug, decide to replace wires at this point, a little better but STILL missing (especially at idle or initial acceleration, minor at speed). Thinking maybe a bad valve, put some Seafoam in crankcase and rest in tank, drive 50 min each way highway to work all week, at times seemed a bit better, but fill up on saturday killed that. I am using 93 octane premium. So here I am, trying to decide which repair to take on next. I welcome your advice or questions.

Thanks, Jeff

Problems 1 and 2 sound like an EVAP problem to me; I am dealing with it right now as well. 3 is due to the seal on the filler cap deteriorating. However, before you replace it perform a balloon test on the PCV to see how clogged it is. You don't want to fix that seal until you fix the PCV because you will end up blowing out an important seal. 4 is not a problem, thats how winter mode works. The yellow arrow turns on and the car starts in 3rd gear. 3rd gear produces less torque and therefore makes it harder to spein the wheels in slippery conditions. People are divded on this topic. I believe that if used correctly there is nothing to worry about.

That's all I can help you with. Although I think this will help you out -> https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... ilit=+EVAP

Thanks, I saw both of those links earlier. Weird thing is that the hose I replaced that made the turbo start working is the hose justin is showing to remove at the EVAP purge valve. I did find another hose badly degraded, on the air filter box there's a sensor/valve with three hoses connecting to it, the bottom on then goes right next the the turbo charger. I'm on my way to get a new hose. Is that sensor/valve a O2 heater?

Thanks, Jeff

If there's a vacuum leak somewhere in the system, the turbo won't work great. Everything that connects to the intake manifold draws a vacuum, so that could have been why.

The thing on the back of your airbox is a turbo control valve. I'd replace ALL of those hoses while you're at it, you will probably get lots of boost back. The compressor side is a pain; the wastegate is fairly easy.

If you remove the heat shield at the rear left part of the engine, it will be much easier to find the other end of the hose that runs from the TCV to the CBV.

BTW, has anyone ever tried the Forge Recirculation Valve? Is it more heavy duty than the IPD HD CBV, or does it just look cooler?

thanks jab,
awesome post on the pcv change(i'm hoping I can avoid it for awile). got the hose on the compressor side. while I was at it I found a plug with some wires pulled out of it. I took pics but the computer I'm using doesn't have mini sd slot and I've no adapter, so I'll try to explain it. Not down quite to the compressor there are some connections, right on top of the tranny, with some of the wires going further down the firewall. Mine are grey plastic with orangish sides. One of the plugs has four holes for wires and I saw four wires laying down near the frame(go figure). Here's the prob, I don't know which order to put them in, one is black, one is light grey, and two are white, and none of the wires on the other plug match the colors. uggh! suggestions? diagram link? maybe my trans range sensor code?
Thanks, Jeff

Be sure to clear all of the codes and then check to see which ones come back first. Some maybe so old that are not relevant. I think I had about that many when I bought our 855T last year.

Thanks kruznby, I did...and actually got more!! lol. I'm trying to figure this wire thing out on the top/back of tranny near firewall so I can get it back together for work tomorrow. And while I'm working on the hoses and turbo now, my MAIN problems are the misfires and stall after fuel issues.

More info: If you check out jablackburns post about PCV system repair and scroll down the pics until you see one labeled "Old hose connections to PTC nipple". The wires I'm trying to identify are not visible but would be at the bottom right hand corner of his pic, under the turbo hose. I just need to know which wires to put in which holes.
thanks, jeff

Update: Found a great page of wiring schematics for all systems. The wires in question had to do with the rear heated O2 sensor, got them plugged in properly, put car back together, runs, same miss at idle, but...as jab said, boost is improved, starting to feel more like a turbo now. Took it for a 20 mile test drive, at least no CEL for now. Looks like tomorrow I'll check codes again, look into the EVAP purge valve, do a compression check, check the injectors and fuel filter. And I haven't even got into the ABS or SRS faults. HA!
