Opinions on S40 R series?

I'm looking at a smaller replacement for my aging 97 850GLT wagon, and was looking at the V50, but they're in short supply. There are some pretty good deals on the S40 R series at a lot near me.

Are these decent? Are they holding up well? Any feedback would be good.

I don't know much about them yet, but having 3 late 90s Volvos, I'm already familiar with the costs of maintaining aging Volvos.
