Hi all,
Just stopped in to a Volvo dealership for an oil change, and now Im interested in an XC90. Another dealership has an 06 2.5T, loaded,91k miles. Seems to be in good shape and at a decent price. Just checking to see if its a good car or not. I know about most Volvos, just not very familiar with the 90s,except T6 tranny problems
Thanks!
2006 XC90 2.5-good/bad?
Hi, Just make sure it has full service history and good warrenties, can be expensive for repairs / parts, read my earlier reply to "reasons to buy an XC90" love my car but has come at a hefty price due to me NOT having "due diligence" costs based on UK prices where i am based, good luck and enjoy, Rob.

Folks seem to have less issues with the inline 5 cyl motor but then say its under powered for the vehicle.
The previous poster speaks the truth. These were great cars when they were new. Its how they were cared for in between that makes the difference.
Its better to have proof of proper maintanance than not. Make sure it makes sense to you. I have gone to inspect cars where the owner has had to spend thousands because they didn't change the fluids regularly. They have a big stack of service receipts they call a service history - but I don't want that car.
If you buy it have the fluids changed out - all of them. The Volvo dealer will say they don't need it and they are filled for life. Thank them and have them do it anyway.

Listen for any strange noises from the rear suspension (one of the more common problems with the -90's), and look for sludge on the oil cap/stick. Check the transmission fluid as well.
The 2.5T in AWD form feels extremely underpowered, in much the same way a Jeep Liberty is. Then again, if you just do around-town driving and cruising on the highway, you probably won't need anything more.
If you just want a big crossover for hauling things/family, and are not dead-set on the Volvo, I'd suggest comparing other makes and models as well. Honda and Toyota also make a very good AWD crossover, in both Pilot and Acura MDX forms, as well as the Toyota Highlander with substantially more power and better gas mileage. It really depends on what you are looking for.

Volvo 2.5T good- Volvo 2.6 BAD, V8 - Jury is not back on that one yet.
The 2.6 L engines matched with the trannies have had issues with the trannies. as another poster said- if you only want one for general highway cruising and around town driving the 2.5L is perfect.
IMO, go for the 2.5T I have one with over 100K miles on it, taken care of, looks and runs like new. I get about 32 MPG with it I have only had to replace the wheel bearings, brakes, plugs and one coil pack in three years. If you buy one I recommend replacing the plugs right away with pulstar plugs. these suckers are great and do increase your performance and mpg by 1-2 gals per mile. Not significant but performance is. I noticed it right away.
If you want to buy one- ask the dealer if you can take it on an overnight test drive. Take it to an independent shop and have them inspect it. Pay close attention to the suspension- wheel bearings, tie rod ends(under recall), and ball joints have been known to go on these. You'll spend about 30-50 bucks to have this done, but spending 30-50 is better than spending 13-15K for a lemon. There is also another recall on the books right now for the fuel pumps on these models.
Make sure the turbo works properly. check the dipstick for signs of oil coking(is oil baked on the dip stick?). This might mean that the engine was run low on oil and could have coked up the turbo. If the diptick is clean and shiny then you should be good.
check the fuel door- is the spring that holds the door broken? Have them replace it. Does the fuel door lock work correctly? If not they should replace that as well. Just another bargaining chip for ya.
If you do buy it- make sure the dealer will perform the upgrades on the software BEFORE you drive it off the lot.
Above all run a carfax on it and if repair records are available through the dealer ask to see them. This is your RIGHT before you buy a car.
