99 S70 windows and sunroof not working

Post by adha153 »

I have a 1999 S70 and one day the windows and sunroof quit working. The drivers window switch clicks when pressed down. I read in the owners manual and it said that there is an automatic circut breaker for the windows and sunroof that doesn't need to be replaced regularly. I don't know where anything is located on the car or where to look to see if it is the circut breaker. The other thing I thought it might be is some kind of relay or main fuse, but again, I dont know where to check. Thank you for any help.

Main fusebox under the hood. Position 37. Be careful! It may be hot.
Quite often the master window switch goes kerflooey and may short.
The auto reset CB will just sit there and cook...
Since the sunroof shares the feed, no sunroof either.

The window master will pop up out of the armrest with a bit of cajoling.
Unplug it and see if your sunroof is back. Then you know where to start.

Thanks for your help. I found position 37. I pulled it and underneath the plastic where it goes was melted. I put 39 into 37 in case 37 was bad and tried the windows. They still didn't work and when I pulled the fuse out to put it back it did heat up and was hot. Now I know that it's not a bad fuse. Is the window master the switches in the driver door to control the windows?

Hi adha153: Were you ever able to fix the problem you described above? I am having the exact same issue with my 1999 S70 right now. I am wondering if it is the master power swith for the windows. Any information or suggestions you can offer would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi BEJinFbk: My 1999 S70 is acting the exact same way as adha described above (windows & sunroof don't work, clicking when depress driver side window switch). I even occasionally see the faintest stream of smoke come out from near the master control switch when I start the car. I'm assuming this may be because of what you described above with the switch shorting and the auto reset CB cooking. If this is actually what is happening, does the switch need to be replaced? Thanks so much for your help.

There is also overheat relay near the fuel pump relay, I believe it's 105.

If it's gotten to the point that it's smoking, it may be too late.
Have a look and see if yours can be cleaned/repaired:

?

Do you mean overload relay? 105 is an ignition switch overload relay for a number of systems in the car.
I shows in the diagrams as relay 2/30 an comes on and off with the key to help carry the load of all the
electrical accessories in the car. Keeps the load off of the ignition switch contacts. ( So does 106 - aka 2/31 ).
If it fails, there would be quite a few dead systems. Probably just the standard messed up master window switch.
Once the master is unplugged, the dead window switch theory can be tested by checking sunroof operation.

Oh, ok. Just don't know why the sunroof isn't working along with the windows.

Is the ignition going bad? Have you tried whiggling the key?

Sunroof and windows share the same circuit breaker, #37.
Makes'em just like cheap Christmas lights...
