battery or batteries replacement for remote

I have a 2001 S40 whose remote key entry has stopped working. I think I need to replace the battery(ries).
But,I have replace one CR2016 battery inside the remote and it still does not work.
The manual states to replace TWO CR2016 batteries - but then I cannot close the remote.
Does one battery go inside the remote and the second some place else?

All help and clarification is greatly appreciated.
