Removing turbo - pretty straight forward? 1995 855
Like the topic states. Am I looking at a nightmare or just worry about spilling some coolant and oil?
Thanks ya'll

As long as the three nuts to the down pipe, and the 4 nuts that mount the turbo to the manifold come loose, the rest is pretty easy. If they won't break loose you'll need some heat to free them up so you don't break the studs. Also make sure you replace the gaskets and O-Rings for the oil and coolent lines.
According to this info you can remove the band clamp and separate the turbo without the wastegate. If you have to remove the wastegate he mentions chipping stubborn bolts off with a chisel. There's one nut I cannot get, so I'm going to leave the wastegate in if possible.

The oil intake banjo bolt requires a stubby 17mm spanner. Another trip to Sears tomorrow.
This tutorial has been very helpful.

if you do need to replace the hot side of the turbo, you better PBlaster the hell out of them for a few days. If you do that, they should pop loose without much effort.
If you just need to replace the center of the turbo, then yes, you can undo the oil and coolant lines, intake hoses, and then pop the v-clap and be good to go. I did this to have the center section of my turbo on my 940 rebuilt.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Much appreciated. How easy is it to remove the center band? Anything getting in the way ?FCPGroton wrote:+1

I've removed all 3 banjo bolts, the coolant and oil lines are loose, but the turbo still won't budge from the wastegate. The coolant banjo bolts have some crust in them, and the oil bolt looks lacquered. The whole inside of the turbo probably has that oil lacquer.
I don't want to break the damn thing. Worst case I'll still be able to replace the water cooling pipes, hoses, bolts and washers. I'm glad I haven't bought the rebuild kit yet, I don't know if this thing is coming out. I'll try tapping it with a mallet or something, I don't know man.
You'll need to access the front facing coolant banjo bolt from below.

Noob question: Do you have to drain the oil and coolant if you're pulling out the turbo?

coolant - yes, quite a bit will come out so draining it beforehand would mess things much neater
oil - no, i found the oil loss from the oil lines to be minimal upon removal from turbo, you could probably even stuff a rag into the banjo bolt to minimize oil loss
