I've gone camping!

Post by jblackburn »

Hey guys,

I suppose this qualifies as "General Discussion", but feel free to get rid of it, Matt.

Even though my presence here has been dwindling a little bit as of lately as things have been pretty crazily busy for me this month, I will pretty much be gone from the Internet more or less for the next two weeks or so, or at least from Saturday - next Sunday. After that, I will be caught up moving the next week. I will still check email every night from my phone, so if you have a quick question about something I've helped you out with before, feel free to send it my way and I will be more than happy to help you if I can.

For those who may be interested, I'll be doing a camp down in Charlotte, NC. A group of ~50 "adults" and high school kids will be working and re-vamping 5 homes that belong to low-income families. This is something I did for 3 years back when I was in high school, and this will be my first chance since I have gone off to college to get back into it. The families we have worked with in the past were some of the nicest people you will ever meet, and the guy's house I will be working on this week surpasses all the others, which is why I chose his home.

It will be the hardest house we're taking on...this house pretty much needs a new floorboards and supports through the entire back side of the house, a completely new roof, and the kitchen/bathroom both need to be revamped as well. There are several places in the house where you can actually see the ground/sky. I expect it is a good deal more than a weeks worth of work, and several of the adults may be going back on the weekends to finish what they can, but hopefully at the present we can make the house much more liveable for the family.

You can look for me throughout the week on the camp website here if you want to keep track of our progess. Pictures will be up every evening, starting Monday night. I will be working on the Banks home.

Below are some preliminary pictures of when I went down to tour all the homes the campers will be working on next week. I'm sorry, they're pretty terrible quality, but better ones can be seen online:

The back of it...as you can see, the roof is pretty much collapsed. The siding, at least is good shape...I fricken hate dealing with siding.

What good can we do in a week, you may ask? Well, here was 2005's result:

Hey, the Volvo may even get put to good use hauling cinder blocks and lumber like the old minivan was

Nah, just kidding, I won't do that to it.

Take care you guys!

I'm back!

It was a great week - we got a lot more done on our house than I had originally thought, and then some. Boy, was it hot down there though!

The "team" from the whole camp

Here's some before & after shots for you:

Image
Didn't look SO bad, but just about everything in this kitchen was rotted, right down to the floor joists. We completely tore out everything, and this was the end result:

Notice my BEAUTIFUL drywalling

The awesome new ceiling

And, of course, the completely new roof...but I didn't have any good pictures of that.

All in all, and as always, it was a great experience and I'm glad to have been able to help such a great family improve their living conditions.
