Cruise Control cuts out

Post by paulhetty5 »

Has anyone had this issue where you will be driving on the freeway with the criuse control on, then out of the blue it will shut off? The criuse control light is still on but no cruise when hitting any of the bottons. The cruise will work again but at its own will. At first this problem wasn't so bad but know its almost to a point where the cruise will not work at all. After looking at the EVTM on this system my first thought would be a clockspring or a brake position sensor. Before I replace these items I wanted to see if anyone had the same problem as I don't have a scanner to check the system out.

thanks for your input.

My motto (that I don't always follow) is check the simplest thing first. Both my cars have had cruise control that stopped working, in both cases it was simply the brake switch that got out of adjustment. Above the brake pedal are two switches. The lower one for brake lights, the upper cuts out the cruise when you step on the brake. Drive down the highway with your foot pulling back on the pedal, if the cruise works, there's your problem. On my '96 I only had to press the switch closer, it has different positions that it clicks into. On my '98 I had to get a little more creative. A bread bag clip and some two sided tape between the switch and the brake pedal arm gave it the extra push needed to activate the cruise. Yes folks another use for bread bag clips! Good luck, I hope that it's just the simple problem.
