SRS Service urgent on & passenger seat belt does not lock

Hi,
I changed my alternator back in April and since I got the message:
SRS-Airbag System
Service urgent
Any idea what's teh problem and how to deal with it.

I also noticed y passenger's seat belt does not lock. I looked inside but there was nothing dropped in. However, it mechanism looks different than the buckle of the driver seat. I am assuming it was broken. Is it easy to fix or something was bavly done with I changed the alternator that things got messed up? If it just happend that it was broken, I would like to fix it myself as I can't afford to take it to the mechanic (I have other issues in the car more important). I am a woman that I can think of myself to be handy, is it easy to fix?

Welcome to MVS,

I'm not sure why your belt won't latch but that won't necessarily cause a SRS fault. The passenger's side belt latch is very different from the driver's side. I'm not sure why but I think it may have something to do with belting in a child seat.

Since you started at an alternator failure I think I would start by pulling the battery post for 10 minutes or so and then put it back in in a very positive manner. It may reset the SRS brain.

Beyond that you need to have the codes read to find out what the SRS system is mad about and that is pretty much a dealer only thing. You can read power train codes all day with a generic scanner but once you get into things like the SRS, ABS, etc it takes a specialized scan tool.

I'd recommend pulling the negative battery cable off, and let it sit for a while.

What do you mean by putting the battery in a very positive manner? Should I put the positive first for a while and then put the neagtive.

By saying in a positive manner I mean push the cable onto the battery post like you mean it. It may spark a little bit but you don't want multiple sparks.

I'll move you to the S-80 forum where more insight might be had.

Hi I need help with my 99 s80 : my SRS Service Urgent light is on and I had try many way to reset the light and is still on and the code 26 came up during the reset proset. I also had ask the Volvo Expert and paid $15 and he came back and state I would need to bring it to a dealer to reset it or find someone with a Vadis software to reset it. I believe the are some member with the same problem. Had anyone able to reset the light?

The advice you got earlier in the post was 100% accurate (and free). The SRS service light can only be cleared with specialized code reading equipment. Obviously, the dealer has the equipment and they will normally not be ashamed to charge you for the reset (and anything else they can get you for). Few of us can afford the dealer's equipment and software. The BSR PPC diagnostic device can do it, and I bought one for ~$200 - great investment. Unfortunately, they are no longer sold and their newest model, which apparently only recently became available, is a good bit more expensive. If you are patient and lucky, you might find a used one. Otherwise, live with the light on or go to the dealer walking backwards bent over (if you know what I mean).
