Broke my Manual shifter

Post by mcmike331 »

Hi everyone i looked all over the internet for help and could find nothing. i was taking my shifter off my volvo today and it seems the knob itself comes off, and then there is a long plastic piece that is connected to a groove on the shifters shaft. My problem is i snapped the clips that hold this piece on and i cannot find ANY aftermarket shifter knobs or anything for it. Did i seriously screw up here or am i overlooking my local parts stores?? ANY help would be greatly apprciated thanks guys

I'm not sure what part you are referring to.

Here is a parts diagram.

ok well that diagram may help me out a little in explaining my dilemma. number six on that diagram is completely and totally off, so all that is showing is that shaft( part number 5). I am having EXTREME difficulty finding an aftermarket shifter that will fit correctly on there. I really wouldnt like to have to buy the stock piece being 45 or 50 dollars or so but if i have to i will shifting with that damn metal shaft is very annoying. once again guys thank you for any and all of your help it is greatly greatly appreciated. Cheers

Any shifter knob that has the same thread should work fine. They are all over the place on price and in style points.

i see. but the problem is (and maybe im wrong idk much about it so help me if you can lol) i dont believe it threads on there isnt any sort of threads or anything... there is thought a groove where the factory knob sort of "clipped" on don onto the shaft. i did try to buy one knob and it went on until a certain point. Maybe i have to really and i mean really apply some pressure and it will connect after some elbow grease lol. Like i said though i have no experience dealing with that so if you could help me step by step or somethin that would be great but like i said there arent any threads or anything??

I have not yet - Thank God - had to tear apart my linkage on the shifter itself but from VADIS it looks like the knob threads on. On the automatics I think you just push in the release button and pull upward until your hands are bleeding from smacking the rear-view mirror when it finally pops free - It happens quickly on the automatics.

i just dont seen any threads on my shifter shaft. its the bare shaft showing. The leather on my factory knob was just cumbling off so i started to peel it off completely. one there was a black plastic piece that of connected to the shaft itself only by clips in a groove on the shaft. Is there any aftermarket knobs that just simply snap on with clips like my factory one or am i overlooking huuuuge step in all of this. sorry i prob am being a total pain is the ass hahha but ive never seen something like this?

Here's the step by step. There is NO threads.
Unfortunatly I don't know of any aftermarket solution and you don't ever see any in the wreaking yards.
Try Car-Part.com for a whole shifter assembly, otherwise you'll be going to the dealer

1. Remove shift lever knob Cut away the outer knob sleeve with a knife
Remove inner sleeve using pincers to expose circlip.
Remove knob.

2. Remove shift lever boot (gaiter)
Remove cover panel from underneath parking brake lever
Remove shift lever boot (gaiter) from tunnel bracket by pushing on rear bellows fastening from underneath via the hole under the parking brake lever.
Pull boot (gaiter) off lever.

3. Install shift lever boot (gaiter) Locating stub on bellows ring must fit into locating groove on shift lever.
Push ring down until it reaches the lower locking groove.
Install shift lever bellows in tunnel bracket: press hooks in front home first, then snap fittings on side and rear.
Install cover panel underneath parking brake lever. Install shift lever knob.
Match locating lug on shift lever knob to guide groove on shift lever and push down to locking slot.
