v70 xc awd
hi have just joined.and would like to ask a question, before spending loads of money? my question is i was driving along and noticed a light had come on , it a yellow light showing a picture of an engine, does any body have a clue why this light would come on and stay on, the only thing i done different was put a higher octane petrol in it, and this is when the light came on about ten minutes after i had done this. thanks for any input
That would be your check engine light. It could come on for many different reasons. Have you noticed if the car drives differently at all? Smells? Sounds? Smoke? The best thing to do instead of guessing is to have the check engine light code(s) read. You can take it to a Volvo dealer or mechanic but they will charge you. Though most auto parts store (Napa) will test it for free. If you don't go to a dealer/mechanic and go to a auto parts store then make sure to write down all of the codes and come back here and someone should be able to help you figure your next step. Good luck.
Was just re-reading your post and had a thought If the light came on 10 minutes after putting in fuel then your gas cap may not be put back on correctly. If that is the case it could definitely cause your check engine light to come on. Check that and let us know.ginger999 wrote:hi have just joined.and would like to ask a question, before spending loads of money? my question is i was driving along and noticed a light had come on , it a yellow light showing a picture of an engine, does any body have a clue why this light would come on and stay on, the only thing i done different was put a higher octane petrol in it, and this is when the light came on about ten minutes after i had done this. thanks for any input

Welcome to MVS!
The check engine light is not a "yellow light showing a picture of an engine" though, the Check Engine light simply says "Check Engine".
Which did you have?
PS. Don't worry about what fuel you put in, that has nothing to do with it. Higher octane will not hurt, and in fact it's better for your turbo car.

Since Ginger999 mentioned putting petrol in the tank, it is my guess that she (he?) is in GB and perhaps their instument panel legends are different than this side of the pond???
hi, yes i am in england, and yes my light has a picture of an engine. i checked my petrol cap which was on ok, i disconected my battery and the light now goes off when i start the engine and stays off. i guess i have just reset the managment system, and the problem is still there, but i gather if the problem is still there the light will come on again in the near future. many thanks for all of your inputs, and will be interested if there are any more comments about this broblem
I would definitely get a shop to read the code. It should still be saved in the computer. It may be an simple problem or a major problem. If ignored a small issue can certainly become worse and more expensive.
