What would cause exhaust smoke to come out of the oil filler cap, a little from the exhaust system but mainly it seems to get inside the car as I can smell it through the heater vents.
thanks

Smoke from engine
This same problem happened to my friend. He never found out what it was, but I do have a warning. A mechanic told him to drill holes in the oil cap and it would solve the problem. He was driving a few days after this when his car lit on fire. Whatever you do, don't take off the cap or drill holes into it. It may seem logical, but like I said, a mechanic told him to do it.

This sounds like a plugged up PCV system. Oil sludge can clog up the hose that goes from the collection box under the manifold over to the flame trap on the throttle body. The result is combustion gases building up pressure in the crankcase.
It would help on a question like this, as it would on most, to know the model, year, and mileage.

I agree with dosbricks, if the PCV system is fine after checking it over then more then likely you are getting blow-by on one or more of the pistons.

I think the suggestion of drilling holes in the oil filler cap sounds a bit unscientific and obviously dangerous.
Will check out the PCV hoses, hope its that and not piston blow-
by as would that suggest new rings or even a rebore?
Car is a 1998 2.5Turbo with only 76000 miles.
thanks
