differential/transmission

Post by josh »

Hey
Looking for some advice about my '96 850 turbo wagon. Something has happened which seems to be locking up the drivetrain. I tought maybe my auto-trans was going, but someone suggested a potential problem with the differential. Here's how it works (or not). When put into reverse, it feels as though there is a great load on the car, or almost as if it were stuck in forward and reverse at the same time. When you give it gas, you need to floor it, and at that point, it will move backwards, but jerky and almost spinning the tires. Putting the car into a forward gear produces a similar result, onl;y going forwards of course. Anyone?????

Thanks
josh

Put in Neutral. Push car. If it doesn't roll, your parking brake shoes are stuck or your transmission is locked.

If it rolls it's definitely something with your trans.

Thanks Matt
Funny enough I just returned from Seattle myself... anyhow, the rear wheels spin fine (unfortunatley) but the front will only spin forwards but not backwards. Any hope that it is a differential problem? If it is the tran. can anyone recommend anything? Are they worth having rebuilt if you can find someone, vs. new which run about $3000 I am told... I just would love not to have to sink that much into the car seeing as I just got my tax return- that's life eh?

thanks
josh

Being that these units are transaxles you are not really any better off if it is a damaged differential than if it was a transmission. Still same amount of labor to get the unit out and it will probably warrant replacement with a new or rebuilt one anyway due to the labor and parts costs of R&Ring yours.
