V70XC '99 Engine code P1175 after reconnecting battery

Post by RichSad »

The cable that provides positive (red) power to the electrical system on my Volvo broke yesterday leaving the car dead on the road. We fixed the cable and started the car. I then entered the radio code and all seemed well. It started and ran OK this morning, though seemed to be idling a little rough.

After about 120 miles, the car stalled as I pulled into a gas station. It started up immediately but still seemed to be idling rough. I popped the diagnostic code reader and found 2 codes waiting: One was the P0113 that has been there for a month or two now but the new code was P1175 (Fuel Adaption, Bank 1). It then said severity unknown and to call an 800 number.

I am not sure if the new error is the result of the power being completely shut off and the car needs to adjust itself over time, or if this is related to the P0113. Yesterday while fixing the power we also popped out the Intake Air Temp sensor and inspected the electrical contacts for corrosion. We saw no massive corrosion as you would typically see if that was the problem so I plan to order a new IAT sensor.

The rough idling and the new code have me really scared though. Before the electrical problem, the idle was smooth as can be. Now it is little rough with something of a cyclical nature where it revs slightly and then diminishes and the cycle repeats. I've read that after the computer is offline it can take a bit for the car to recalibrate so it is possible this is fairly normal, but it doesn't feel normal.

The car is 1999 V70XC with 2.4 turbo and 165,000 miles. Advice?

I think I found the problem. It appears while we were inspecting the IAT Sensor we didn't seat it back in correctly. So when I looked under the hood the IAT sensor was not in place leaving an open hole in the air intake manifold. I reseated the IAT sensor and cleared the error codes. The car ran fine and idled correctly. However, it is still throwing the P0113. I would say at this point it is time to replace that sensor. I know it has been said here that it is not a high failure part, but it appears mine is not working right. It's been throwing the P0113 code for a while. I have cleaned the electrical connections and it still throws the error. It seems like a fairly inexpensive part, although not many places carry it.

Sounds like the sensor may have blown out when the power cable broke. That could have been enough of a power surge to pop it. Let us know if the new sensor fixes it.

Hi Andrew, That is certainly possible, but I have some evidence that suggest that might not be what happened. The reason I say this is I've been getting the P0113 code for a month or two prior to the power cable breaking. During that month I have taken it out and attempted to clean the electrical connections (at the advice of people here). That has not helped. So I suspect the IAT sensor had blown out prior to this electrical event.
