How do I remove mirror?

I have to replace the rear view mirror (it's peeled, etc.), so I p/u a compass type mirror, but I need to get the old mirror off COMPLETELY...that is, I have to separate it's base from the glass. The new mirror has a different base.
How do I get the mirror off the glass? It's glued on really well.
