P0455 S90 Volvo

I have a 1998 Volvo S90 that pulled a P0455 emissions code and failed inspection. Ideas would be appreciated.

P0455 relates to Volvo diagnostic code ECM 68 - leak diagnostic. On starting the engine the control module performs a leak diagnostic of the fuel tank system. If the leak diagnostic pump moves too quickly or can't pressurise the fuel tank system this is interpreted as a leak and it will set the code.

The problem could be as simple as the fuel filler cap not being tight enough or missing. More serious problems could be a leak in the fuel tank, the fuel filler pipe, the cap itself, the EVAP canister, the canister purge valve or any of the pipes linking these components.

Start with the easiest and check the filler cap is tight. Also check the sealing ring on the cap as they can deteriorate as they age.
