start up after rebuild

Post by ashleywoods »

I just finished get eng back in my 94 850 turbo. I rebuilt the eng that had over 300,000 on it. Is there anything special I should do before the initial start up? I have cranked the eng over by hand a few times, and then with the starter, with the fuel and ignition disabled. I have put a lot of time and money into this, and do not want to mess it up. Thanks for any help.

Other than the obvious stuff like making sure you filled it with oil (A Buick dealer replaced my father-in-law's engine and forgot to put in any oil - it made it to the edge of the lot before it blew up). Double check your timing marks and if they are correct just light it up.

Doing the hand cranking of the engine several times and ensuring the marks line up is the first thing.

You should also double check the timing belt the tensioner bolts as well as the other pulleys to ensure it is tightened to the right specs. I actually replace the bolts altogether ( less than 2 bucks each from volvo) Hate to lose a whole engine for such a cheap piece of metal.

Make sure nothing is in the timing belt chamber such as broken plastic pieces or old gasket if you remove the water pump.

If this is the second belt change I would replace the tensioner and other pulleys. I am assuming you have the hydraulic tensioner but if not then make sure the proper tension instructions is followed for the manual one.

Happy Repairs!
