Hi all,
Is there anyone else here who is physically disabled on the forums? I am 46 years old, have spina bifida, am a wheelchair user, and drive a blue 1997 Volvo 960 sedan with a wheelchair in the back and hand controls. Would love to hear your perspectives on these wonderful cars.
Any other physically challenged drivers here?

Welcome, Kent.
We've had a few... two in the last year that I know of. Can't recall usernames. I'll post this to the home page, maybe it'll attract physically disabled Volvo drivers through searches. If you have any, post some pics of your 960. I love custom builds.

Hi I use both a wheelchair and handcontrols on my 97 RHD Tuned 855 T-5. As a disabled driver I also carry out most of my repairs. Did you get custom hand controls or self build like mine ? I've been driving for the best part of 20 years and really don't agree with the extreme prices of hand control [the push pull style not the smart electronic style and in the UK as prices in the USA may be lower most things are]

Matthew1,
Thanks! My car is posted in the Photos of your car section. I'll have to take a picture of the cockpit tomorrow and post it here. My hand controls are an old set of MPD (Mobility Products & Design) and were first installed on my first car in 1990. They've been loyal to me ever since. This is my first personal Volvo. I have been driving them at work for some time. My wife and adopted sons also have spina bifida. Wife and children are from Scandinavia. Wife is Norwegian, Older son is from Sweden, the toddler is from Denmark. She drives little else but Volvo cars, she owns a 1996 960 Wagon, a 1999 V 70, and a 2010 XC 90 (she's trading it in tomorrow for a 2010 XC 70 Wagon). She's heard horror stories about the infamous GM Automatic on the XC 90. She also drives with hand controls. We're a Volvo family. I do as much of our own work as possible. Note: Ingrid traded her XC 90 today for a nicely optioned out XC 70. We are supposed to have hand controls installed on it tomorrow and be ready to drive it in the afternoon. Built in child seats and all. Each of our children are alive thanks to Volvo safety features and the fact that the car still looks like a car after being hit. I trust their safety to no other car.
