Help! 850 will not start

Post by Sussex »

My 97 850 wagon will not start. No cranking, no nothing. All lights, headlights, everything comes on, but when you turn the key nothing. First happened about a week and a half ago, bought a new battery and fine. This morning it would not start, my wife said she locked the steering wheel and tried and it started. Tonight went to a friends house and nothing. Any ideas? I am new in my town and do not want to get soaked by a mechanic.

I would suspect the starter before the PNP switch. It usually gives warning. The starter is directly under the intake manifold if you want to replace it.

CHECK YOUR GROUNDS...BATTERY, ENGINE STRAP(LEFT REAR ENGINE TO FIREWALL) AND YOUR STARTER HOT LEAD. ALSO TAP THE STARTER LIGHTLY WITH HAMMER AND HAVE SOME ONE CRANK THE ENGINE(WATCH YOUR DIGITS AND TAKE YOUR TIE OFF!!!!) IF IT STARTS WHILE TAPPING ING. YOU NEED A STARTER OR BRUSHES.
