It is getting stronger and comes from the general area by the base of the drivers door [hinge side] and wheel well. Most noticable when sitting idle and just after I shut it off. I see no visible leaks or drips. I am thinking it may be from the return line or vent line? It's most noticible on hot days.
I just started the car after letting it sit for 15-20 minutes and no odor at all. When this happened today it was hot outside and the tank was almost on reserve. I put 10 gallons or so of gas in and it still made the smell when I got home.
But now...no odor.

It sounds like the hose on the evap system canister (it's in the front wheel well on a 98 btw) is loose and/or cracked, either the J-hose or the line up from the fuel tank itself.

Hey, look what I found!
That should answer your question of what it looks like. That car I believe is a 99 or 2000 model, though. To get to it on a 98, you'll have to remove the fender liner on the inside of the front left wheel and peel it back, much like the process to change the front engine mount on the other side of the car.
They toyed back and forth with moving the canister between years, and I think finally realized it was a stupid inaccessible place to put it, and moved it back again.
Have a look:

OK...I found it. It's rectangular w/2 small evap. hoses and one lager rubber hose that routes up the well and into the engine compartment under the brake master. When I dropped the unit from it's bracket [from below] and checked the rubber connector hoses one was a bit loose and sitting at the very end of the plastic hose. I snugged it back up and added a zip tie.
I hope this was the culprit...if not the rubber hose looks lika pita to get to. I ran the car for a bit w/no smell so...
Thanks for the quick replies.
