2001 V70 2.4T headlight bulb replacement

Post by Fay »

Hi,

I thought it would be a simple task to change the low beam headlight bulb on a 2001 V70 2.4T but I've managed to break something. I'm hoping somebody can help me figure out how to fix it.

There is a black plastic connector that covers the wires that connect the bulb to the electrical system. The connector wouldn't come off so I pulled it too hard and broke the plastic connector. I then did manage to get the bulb free of the wires and it looks like it is burned out.

But now I have two questions. I have not gotten the replacement bulb yet.

1. There are two wires that connect to the bulb. One is gray and one is yellow. If I hadn't broken the piece of plastic holding these wires it might be obvious how they go back on the bulb but now that they're just hanging out there, I wonder if I can connect them to the replacement any way I want to or is there some special way they have to be connected? Looking at the old bulb, there doesn't seem to be any difference in the two prongs at the bottom of the bulb.

2. Do I need to replace the plastic piece that broke? It seems it would make it easier to have it in place for future bulb replacements (if I can manage to get it off without breaking it) but I was wondering if it was necessary?

Thanks so much for any help you can give!

Fay

I have this issue with my Husky, and I just plug it in one way, and if it doesn't work, I swap the leads. It generally doesn't take more than two tries ;)

Thanks for the responses!

I wound up having a mechanic change the bulb because I was in the Volvo picking up another car he was working on. He said it didn't matter which wire connected to which post on the bulb and either he was right or he lucked out on the first try because he connected the wires and it worked.

The mechanic said I didn't need to replace the plastic piece that broke because the wires don't really have an opportunity to touch each other or anything metal. I haven't decided yet whether I'm going to replace it. Volvo wants $5.00 for the part which is ridiculous for a tiny piece of plastic that's obviously going to disintegrate eventually.

Thanks again!
