transmission at 60mph

Post by mfolstein »

Hello,
Recently I started a new commute 60 miles of turnpkie driving each way. My 1999s70 works well at lower speeds but is rough shifting above 60 mph. Sometimes there is a clunk and other times a scrape sound like driving over a grid. This transmission was originally defective and replaced at 5000 miles. Is this fixable?
thanks for the advice.

How many miles are on it now? Is there a vibration when you hear the sounds?

Look at your transmission fluid -- if it's red, good. If it's dark and burnt smelling, bad.

Hello,
There are 49000 miles on the car. Recently changed the transmission fluid and it was gray-red. On two occasions there was a vibration during gear shift. The more high speed driving I do seems to help some. It is not getting more frequent.
thanks for your advice

mmmm

Hard to say for sure what's going on. I would map the frequency of these occurances. Plot them on a graph, and mark the sound severity and feel severity of each.

Look at your graph every 30 days or so. If they're getting more frequent, you might need to take it in. Less frequent, your problem might be working it's way out of the system. Watch the fluid color and smell for changes. Keep a very clean white rag or white piece of paper around; every month or two dab a bit of fluid from the trans dipstick on it, marking the date. Make sure the conditions are as similar as possible each time, i.e.: just after your commute while the car is idling. This way you can plot the change in fluid color over time.

Also, you can have the dealer pull codes to see if the car is reporting any problems.
