'97 850 ashtray removal

Post by bendvolvo »

I removed the ashtray in order to see if I could replace the lightbulb. Several parts flew out of the tray as I removed it. Now I can't tell how to reinstall the spring-type thing at the back of the tray. I wonder if I am missing some pieces???

What pieces do you have? Tray, spring, and ?

do you think some parts are broken or only potentially missing?

Tell us what parts you have and we can try to help you piece it together. Of course, sometimes a picture may be more helpful.

I have the tray and its housing, the clear gears on left and right and the track that runs inside the housing. I can reinstall these parts and the only problem is that the ashtray does not open with a touch. You have to pull it open. The piece that is loose is a spool with a thin stip of metal wrapped around it. It kind of looks like a new roll of film. I am not sure where this piece goes, but it must be the piece that allows smooth opening and closing of the tray. I have pictures but I am unable to post them. Thanks for any help. This little thing is making me crazy!
