94 850, or 70 series transmision problem

94 850, or 70 series transmision problem
brother has a 94 volvo wagon, not sure what model it is ? transmision seems to have 2 parks ,nuetral and drive. when put in reverse the car seems to still be in park. then move the selector again you have nuetral then drive. exterior linkage seems ok. please help!
