02 XCV70 bad transmission

Post by babar »

anyone have a bad trans with 77K miles on it? If so, I need advice...what where the symptons.?? I have the Volvo dealer telling me they don't know what the problem is (after 5 road tests & $1000 later) and a used Volvo mechanic (after 1 road test)(very reputable) telling me he thinks my trans. is bad.
Sincerely,
Wit's End

If the transmission is totally shot, the car will go nowhere. Mine wouldn't budge when it went bad. Perhaps it's an axle problem. What symptoms are you having that make you think your transmission is bad?

It's not the axle...that got replaced...they tried a new catalytic converter....checked ( the exhaust sytem...replaced exhaust brackets....put in new transmission fluid...the noise occurs after about 15 minutes of highway driving (~70 mph)....continues....you can shut the car off for a 10 minutes or so and it won't happen again until you hit the highway...intown it doesn't seem to happen.

What type of noise? How loud?

It's a low tone...rumbling....puttering....noise that happens with your foot on the pedal or off. I have run a test of taking my foot off the pedal, slowing down on the highway (sometimes the noise will go away but not alway) and putting my foot back on....The noise will reappear if it didn't go way.
Could it be the exhaust system even though the dealer said they checked it and the other Volvo repair shop said they thought it was the trans?

When on the highway going ~70 shift into neutral see if noise continues. If still noisy probably trans., if not look around exhaust (cat, downpipe, etc.)

thanksI'll try the 70 mph test in neutral but I recall I did that and it still makes the noise. At this point, it's getting confusing with everything I or anyone else has tried.

You asked me to try the 70mph highway test. Here's what happened: I got the noise to start at the clockwork time of 15 minutes into a drive, put the car in neutral and the noise was still there, kept the car in neutral and I put my foot on the pedal and noise was still there....does that indicate the transmission is okay and it is really heat shield related?
Thanking EVERYONE who replies in advance!
