Oil weight?

Post by nadz »

Now that winter is approaching should I still use a 10w 30 motor oil? or switch to 5w 30?

You'll be fine with either. 5W-30 is technically better for cold starting, but you likely won't notice any difference at all. If 10W-30 is working well for you, I'd just stick with it.

Are we talking New York City, Western, or upstate?

In upstate NY you will need a synthetic 0W-30 or a 5W-30 (0W-30 preferred)

The ratings above don't tell you the kinematic viscosity or pour point. You will want to look into those and get a nice low pour point. The synthetics far outperform the non synthetics in this area.

The top shelf synth lubes at this time have a cold pour point of -60degrees F.
