1987 240 DL running like a top until first cold day. started later in the afternoon, but not when cold.
block heater? any ideas on what to do and where to get the best/easiest part to help warm the car. last years advice of light bulbs and heating pads around the battery didn't get me anywhere.
thanks!

What engine oil are you using? I use 5W-40 all year in east central Indiana and I don't have a problem with the engine in my 88 765 starting until the outside temp drops below 0 degrees F.

great. that's a good tip. would condensation on the ditributor cap have anything to do with it not starting in the cold? i remember bringing the battery inside last winter and it would stay warm and start right up when put back in.

The distributor cap must be dry to work properly. Condensation can make the spark track through the cap and you will have a no-start situation.
Every winter when I had my 240 I warmed up the oven, removed the cap and plug leads and put them into the oven to dry. After about 30 minutes I sprayed them liberally with Holts Damp Start to seal them. After the Damp Start was dry the cap and leads were put back on the car and worked perfectly throughout the winter.
Two points to remember:
1. Make a note of which plug lead goes where.
2. Turn off the oven before putting the cap and leads in as you don't need to cook them until tender.
Bill.
