I have been browsing through the forums for the past few days and I am impressed with the amount of knowledge one can glean from it. I just recently bought a 2000 S70 GLT SE and am slowly bringing it up to the level it should be at. I have found countless DIY tutorials on stuff I am going to need.
Thanks for the good work.
Also have a question. My son has 1998 BMW 318i. Is there a similar forum out there in cyberspace for him on BMW?
Great Site, is there a similar one for BMW?
I own both makes, and, while there are "similar" sites for BMWs, none are near as friendly or informative as this one in my opinion. I believe your son's 318i is an E36 (BMW's internal alphanumeric designation for the 3-series chassis between certain model years), so you'll want to google search on "E36 DIY" or something similar to see what's out there.
What a great choice for your son - the 4 cylinder BMWs are among the cheapest BMWs to own, and are underappreciated here in the U.S. (The U.S. dealer network that has done a great disservice to BMW by insisting on selling only overpriced, overpowered luxury versions of everything in their line - BMW is quickly becoming the "Bavarian Buick" in my opinion.) Have fun with your cars!

Thanks for the feedback, I'll check under the E36 heading. I noticed a different numbering system and wondered what that was about. I will probably end up doing some repairs with him when he visits during the holidays.

My mom/dad own a 1974 2002 that has been giving them a lot of trouble recently. I found the folks on http://www.bmw2002faq.com/ to be a lot of help about answering some of my questions about the weird brake/clutch setup on that car, but most of the other BMW forums are just like the Honda/Acura forums - young guys that are mostly...well...asses, and not much help. I owned an 80's Accord, and those guys were pretty helpful, but my girlfriend has an Integra - and those guys are completely useless. That's why I like this site, and probably why I drive a Volvo with nothing really done to it. Maybe with an older 318 model you might be able to find some enthusiasts that like them for the car that they are, are willing to offer useful advice, and not what performance stuff you can do to it.
Part of it, too, is just networking with people around your area. I'm sure you'll find some older, more mature BMW owners out there that don't own the big expensive ones, and those are the people that you need to get to know
. There used to be a guy that lived down our street when we had both 2002's who had a BMW from just about every generation since the 2002 through the 80's. He was great about helping us out if we ever needed anything.
