Broken drive train

Post by diesel »

I have a 2000 V40 with 130 000 miles on it. I had some fairly serious vibration coming from the front end, which only occurs when I'm accelerating or climbing a hill. If I put the car in N and rev the motor it is fine. I took it to the mechanic and got the wheels balanced and alignment set. I had the engine mounts replaced recently as well. The problem persisted and I was told that it was something I had to live with, which didn't make sense to me. Through my own research I thought it might be the CV axle and was planning on replacing those. Today the bad stuff happened. It felt like part of my drive train broke. The transmission was spinning, but wouldn't move the wheels and there was a grinding sound. Hopefully, the axle broke (as oppose to the transmission). Does anyone have any opinions on what it might be?

A learning experience: Don't ignore the obvious!
Oh, and you might want to find a different mechanic.
More than likely, it was one of the CV joints/shafts. The shop you had it towed to will let you know. Make sure you get a look at what the broken part looks like for your personal edification.

Just to follow up, it was the CV axle.
