I was looking for a new set of "true" all-season tires for my S60 AWD. I looked at various ones at the online vendors and read reviews plus I have purchased a number of them over the years. Poor treadware, poor winter traction, noisy, poor handling due to soft sidewalls are many of my complaints. Well NO MORE! I stumbled across the Maxxis. I love these these tires!!!!
They do not have any of the issues listed above. It is aggressive, handles tight turns very well and good snow/ice traction. But the prices are awesome! 4 of these shipped to me for $417.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is not some lousy chinese tire. Maxxis is an old US company that make alot of high quality ATV and light truck tires (MUDDERS) etc. They have been pushing into the car market more recently. My sister in-law said it had a high listing on Consumer Report tests as well. (I have not personnally seen this). Would give this the highest rating for I great price. Look at the 420AA rating as well!

I agree those are great tires for the price. I had a set of Hankook HRII 405 on my 01 Eclipse GT and loved them. I hit a deer couple of weeks after I got them so seeing as the car was totaled I kept the tires. When my brother bought his 200 S80 T6 he needed tires so I sold them to him. After driving his car with those tires I liked them better then when I had them on my Exlipse. Now that I own a 2001 S80 T6 I need tires and know exactly what to get. Discounttiredirect.com has them for 98$ each with free shipping, so I'm looking at 400$ for the tires and bout 100$ to have them mounted and balanced, so around 500$ total. The guy I know at my local tires shop is getting me the same tires mounted, balanced with lifetime rotate and balance and flat fix for 510$ out the door. If I had not already owned these tires before Maxxis was one to consider. Good choice on those and good luck with them.
I want it due to the shear inability to continue life without it!!

I'll have to read reviews next time I'm looking. We have a limited range of Maxxis tyres here in Oz.
In the meantime I have a set of Continental ContiProContacts 235/45/17 on the rear of my 93 960 which are amazing in the wet & dry and suited to the tale happy live axle and torque of the 2.9l straight six. On the front I have Goodyear F1s of the same size (oddly Australian made) as these are super grippy sport tyres and suit the sometimes understeering front end. Each tyre was around $160 each (we pay dearly here in Oz for performance tyres & these were great prices)
I previously ran Avon ZZ1s tyres on the rear and almost lost my life in the wet, probably the noisiest and most dangerous (high performance) tyre I've driven on.
My local tyre dealer stocks Maxxis MA-X1s only so not a lot of choice. Viva la difference!!

Current cars VW Transporter 2.5TDI, 2010 XC90 D5 R Design
The Conti DWS tires I saw on tire rack (for S60) were $123.00 ea plus shipping. That tread design might cut it in Phoenix but not in real snow country. I am sure they would hit the mark in all other catagories though the 540 utqg rating is very good. The sidewalls look very good as well.

I had one of my cars out last year in the first (28") snow storm
AWD yes, BRAND NEW Contis, about 5-6" of snow at the time I came home, IT DID NOT SLIP A TIRE ONCE and I live at the TOP of a one mile hill.
Absolutely incredible in light snow, you're wrong.
Short of a real dedicated snow tire, I've never driven anything like it!

I am pleased to hear that, but with more miles on them (say about 20,000) I do not think they will be as well behaved not having an aggressive tread pattern. I could be wrong here, please report in when you get though this winter and roll up some miles on them and I will do the same. I would like to know having an AWD car as well.

I won't have that many miles on them.randyman wrote:I am pleased to hear that, but with more miles on them (say about 20,000) I do not think they will be as well behaved not having an aggressive tread pattern. I have several cars that I rotate my driving in and I rarely drive in snow anyway if I can help it, (it's the other guy I'm worried about)!
That's why they're called DWS, dry, wet snow and have colored wear bars.
When the first bar is worn down, that's the snow bar and they won't be very good in the snpw thereafter, the next is the W bar, (the wet bar) and at the end of their life, they're only good in the dry.
An uniquely designed tire that works as designed and works well
