changing valve cover gaskets....again

Post by volvoQs »

Have slight leak from doing valve cover gasket on my 740 turbo. It's at the front. I didn't clean out the old silicone and apply new. I didn't/don't know how much silicone to use and where? It looks like there was some around the camshaft "humps" front and back. Do I need to let it dry before I put it back together? Can I put some on the gasket on both sides from front to back? Also, should I put the gasket on the head or the valve cover at first?

Thanks!!!!!

I think you are going to hear this a lot. You don't need to use silicone on these engines. As a matter of fact, I have never used silicone sealer on any European engine. I use non-hardening gasket sealer such as the aviation type.

+1.

On the head, otherwise it falls off the cover when you turn it over to put it on the head.

OK this is what you do,first clean the valve cover good and then find a flat concrete floor and move the valve cover around a bit then look to see if there are high spots. These will be indicated by slight scratch marks, if the cover is badly warped a machine shop can fix it further. Go and buy a real Volvo valve cover gasket and coat one side of the gasket that meets the valve cover with either a Permatex Hi tack or better yet use "gaska-cinch" by Edelbrock on the cover itself. Let the parts dry for 10 min. and press them together carefully, this is contact cement and will allowthe two parts to bond together and form a neat seal. don't overtorque the 6mm bolts, you don't want this to look like too much mayo on a sandwich with sealer squishing out.
