I have a 2004 XC90 I bought used about 4 years ago. The battery seems to be strong to me, but my wife claims it has failed to turn over the car on a few occasions. Since it's her car, I figured it would be best to replace it since it's over 6 years old (looks like the original German battery with Swedish sticker on it).
What type of battery would you put in your XC90? I've worked on cars for years, but this is my first Volvo. I've always favored Interstate batteries, but I've also used Bosch.
Marc
What battery would you buy?

Interstate is a good battery but i would use a Volvo battery. I believe there around $130 -$150

If you have Wal-Mart in your area you can find Interstate/Johnson Controls batteries as their store brand.
The battery in that vehicle is in a low stress location in the back but it does have to be a good battery to do its job as the late Volvos, as well as any other feature -laden late vehicle, uses a fair amount of battery power for things that do not go off immediately when igniton is turned off.
The battery area in the XC90 will take a few different batteries. Get the largest one if your does not already have the largest one.
If the battery is as large as the black cover then you are already loaded with the big one.
